Clients' Web Sites

The following links point to sites that I designed and implemented. (Clicking these links will open a new browser window; close that window to return to this page.)

Working with The Fund for Peace, we are creating this website for the TRUST Program, a program of NATO's Partnership for Peace. The goals of TRUST are to help Eastern European countries with the process of demilitarization, particularly in destroying armaments and ordnance.

This is a high-profile, international project where the website is expected to be a central element in facilitating communication between participants and constituents (both sponsoring countries and local populations). I also designed the logo for the TRUST project.

The Fund for Peace is a non-profit organization devoted to finding practical ways to help end war and alleviate the conditions that lead to war. They had recently gone through a significant reorganization and developed new focus for their efforts, and wanted a web site that could grow into a tool for their projects. Since I first started designing and managing their website, we have been through two redesigns to freshen the look and streamline the organization.

The Pansy Forest is the rather fanciful name of an on-line store selling an unusual assortment of premium hand-made gift items. (Yes, I am one of the crafters.) The on-line catalog is built around an installation of the open source commerce software system called Zen Cart. I installed and configured the software, populated the product database, designed the store-specific graphics, and manage the store.

Ars Hermeneutica is an emerging, nonprofit scientific-research organization, specializing in analytical consulting and scientific public-education. The strong graphical design suggests a young, vital, forward-looking company based on solid principles.

Bearotica and Bears on Bears are two books, edited by Ron Suresha, and published by Alyson Books in 2002. Ron wanted to publicize the books and create an on-line presence for himself. What started out in 2002 as three separate sites has now been combined into one site that gives Ron an outlet for promoting all of his writing work.

Americanonyx is a small importer of specialty, home accessory products. They are preparing to market a line of premium lines: bedding, curtains, and tablecloths, all decorated with delicate embroidery. For this site we needed a catalog of all the products that displayed each to its advantage, but was easy to navigate. We wanted the website design to feel like "a cool spring evening's breeze." The website is built as an on-line brochure for business-to-business marketing, rather than an on-line consumer store.

The AFSDC is a non-profit organization, the American face of St David's Cathedral, Pembrokeshire, Wales. This site was to provide some information about the group, and assist in a significant fund-raising initiative with the Cathedral.

VIA Mailing & Printing is a small, full-service printing and mailing company located in Alexandria, Virginia. I did not design or implement their website; rather, I am working with them to help develop new marketing ideas and refine their message. Some of those results will manifest themselves on the website.

Wavix is a young, high-technology company specializing in digital satellite communications. This version of their web site is meant as an informational tool, with dual emphasis on education and marketing.
Sadly, Wavix is no longer operational, so this link now points to an archived, abbreviated version of the original website.

Soy Today was a new dietary supplement, based on a soy derivative. The web site was primarily commercial, with dual goals of informing the public about the benefits of its product and encouraging them to try it. Although the layout and organization is identical to the AFSDC site, note what a difference a few changes in graphic elements can make.

Invent-Tech is a company devoted to helping individual inventors find a market for their inventions. This was a re-design of their existing website, updated to improve its utility in informing people about the company and the products it is promoting.

This is a personal web site for Jeff & Isaac, an expression of their interests and personality. It also is a testbed for new design ideas, so its look is apt to change frequently.

This site is here for historic reasons, rather than to make a statement in graphic design (for which it is distinctly not distinctive). This was the first web site I ever put together, mostly while I was working as Project Scientist on the second Space-Shuttle flight of the Zeno experiment. Incidentally, I also wrote all of the content.

Web Page Designs

Some design ideas never make it to the client's home page, and web sites change over time. In this section I've included some web-page layouts that fall into these categories.

This was a concept page for a project that didn't develop. The WWASP is an umbrella organization concerned with helping teens in difficult circumstances. Our approach was to develop an image that was simultaneously relaxing and reassuring, principally as an information conduit to the parents of the teens.
Wavix, Incorporated
(original home-page design)

In an earlier phase, Wavix included buoy technology as a product line, and this original home page for its site reflected that. The nature of the business has shifted and its site has been updated accordingly, but this design was worth showing.

Document Design

The following are documents designed for print distribution, in different formats. Each had a distinctly different purpose, which is expressed in its design.
Fund for Peace, Annual Report 1999
(excerpts, PDF file, 1.5M)

This was the first report generated by The Fund for Peace since its reorganization, so it deserved special treatment to accomplish its extra responsibilities. The printed report had sixteen pages, printed in two colors, with a 4-color cover; the excerpt contains about half of those pages.
Staffing Proposal to Amtrak
(excerpts, PDF file, 500k)

This was a proposal from a high-tech services company to Amtrak. The excerpts show only the cover and first few pages of a more-than 100-page proposal. The design brief was for a look that would be eye-catching and distinctive, but on the convservative side.

This is a simple promotional flyer for the Soy Today nutritional supplement. In addition to the design and layout, I also developed the ad copy for this purpose. Some of that material later appeared in the Soy Today web site.
